This map shows Kanza land acquired by the U.S. via treaties that Congress redistributed to colleges and universities through the Morrill Act of 1862, including Kansas State University. These higher education institutions then sold these land parcels and used the proceeds to fund their institutions. Learn more about this map here.
K-State student Robin Imbeau created “Interpreting Kanza Land Transfers: A Guide” to help students and educators understand how to use this interactive map and the primary documents linked within. Instructors can provide this guide directly to upper grade students or use this guide to create their own assignments.
Imbeau also created a sample poster that shows how students can conduct research and create their own presentations and posters about the land parcels in the interactive map.
